Things that Are More Valuable than Material Possessions

How do we value material possessions? What are our priorities compare to other things? The most valuable things in life are not things. We need to evaluate our priorities and put material possessions in their proper perspective.

Giving to support the work of the local church is a good time to examine our attitude toward possessions. It is easy for us to overemphasize material things. The most valuable things in life are not things. To put possessions in their proper perspective, consider some things the Bible says are more valuable than possessions.

Family Is More Important Than Possessions.

Proverbs 19:14 – Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord. Could it be that we men act as though our possessions, hobbies, or entertainment are more important to us than our wives?

Psalm 127:3-5 – Children are a heritage from the Lord.

Your family is of greater value than any material pursuit. Where is your treasure? Do you and I have the proper appreciation of our families?

Wisdom and Truth Are More Important Than Possessions.

Psalm 19:7-11 – The law and commandments of the Lord are more to be desired than gold.

Far too often wealthy people fail to appreciate the value of truth. Yet anyone can gain an understanding of the truth and wisdom revealed in the Scriptures.

Godly Character and Reputation Are More Important Than Possessions.

Proverbs 28:6 – A poor man with integrity is better than a rich evil man. Anyone, rich or poor, can have integrity. Integrity cannot be bought; it is the result of living a good life.

Proverbs 22:1 – A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches. Even the poorest person can have a reputation for being good, helpful, and moral. You cannot buy a good reputation.

Where is your treasure? Do you and I have the proper perspective regarding material possessions?

Forgiveness, Favor of God, and Eternal Life Are More Important Than Possessions.

Matthew 16:26,27 – For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

Some day you and I will stand before God in judgment. Not even the wealthiest person can buy forgiveness or the favor of God. Nothing is more important than your soul. The only way to be right with God is to live right with God. You can do that no matter how rich or poor you are.

Do you and I have the proper perspective regarding material possessions? Do we seek to keep our possessions for ourselves, or are we willing to share? Please keep these thoughts in mind as we consider the proper use of our financial blessings.
