Consider
what this means about the evidence for God. How did other atheists and believers
in evolution react? Are scientists all as objective and open-minded as they
claim to be? Should people accept all beliefs that claim to be scientific?
Consider the following:
“In 2007, the world’s leading atheist – Antony Flew – published a book in cooperation with Roy Varghese titled: There Is a God: How The World’s Most Notorious Atheist Became a Believer. Flew noted several times in the book that his life’s mantra was to ‘follow the argument wherever it leads.’ He further confessed: ‘I reached the conclusion about the nonexistence of God much too quickly, much too easily, and for what later seemed to me the wrong reasons.’ … ‘I have followed the argument where it has led me. And it has led me to accept the existence of a self-existent, immutable, immaterial, omnipotent, and omniscient Being.”*
This does not mean that Flew has become a true Christian or even a believer in Christ. Nevertheless, we can learn several important lessons.
Acts 17:24,28 – God made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth … for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, “For we are also His offspring.”
Acts 14:15 – We should turn to “the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them . .. [because] He did not leave Himself without witness…”
God has given sufficient evidence in the universe to convince us to believe that He is the true God.
Many people claim that all true scientists believe in evolution and doubt or deny the existence of God. But even if all people denied God’s existence, that would not change the reality that He does exist and is the Creator of the universe.
Romans 3:4 – “… let God be true but every man a liar.”
Nevertheless, many well-qualified scientists do believe in God and in creation. A significant portion of the greatest scientists in history were creationists. Flew is just a recent convert!
“In the preface of the book, Roy Varghese discussed the responses of those in the scientific community who once lauded Flew as a champion. He wrote: ‘Curiously, the response to the AP story from Flew’s fellow atheists verged on hysteria…. Inane insults and juvenile caricatures were common [among the so-called ‘free thinkers’] …. The advocates of tolerance were not themselves very tolerant. … Our young people need to know that the modern atheistic, ‘scientific’ community is extremely welcoming and open to questions, as long as you arrive at exactly and only the conclusions that they have decided are ‘scientific.’”*
In other words, scientists are human beings with all the flaws and biases common to other humans. Being scientists does not ensure that they will evaluate evidence with honest and open minds, especially if it contradicts their desire to live as they please instead of submitting to God.
Religious and philosophical liberals like to claim that they are tolerant and open-minded and scientific whereas those who disagree with them are bigoted, close minded, and unscientific. It simply is not so! These claims (intentional or not) are an effort to prejudice people against faith in God and the Bible.
Proverbs 18:13 – He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him.
1 Timothy 6:20,21 warns us to avoid “profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge; by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.”
